Wear the future. This is the latest in my “spacepunk” designs, created in my studio with celestial-looking dark blue sodalite stone, pyrite stone, mixed metals silvertone and gunmetal, Czech glass, and European silver-plated copper-core wire. Adjustable between 7 to 8 inches long. The standard women’s wrist size is considered to be 7 inches, but your mileage may vary. Please feel free to query me with questions about sizing. Only one available, unique handmade item, what you see in the pictures is exactly what you receive. Gift boxed.

My spacepunk pieces are born of my love of science fiction such as Firefly, Babylon 5 and Doctor Who. They are unique combinations of materials, designed to look as if it were cobbled together from bits of space debris, alien artifacts, and spaceship parts. Adornment is a human compulsion, old as history, and I imagine would continue if we settled the stars.

Playing “I Spy” in Jen’s studio…

I thought it would be fun to show you some pictures of my studio. It used to be a whole room until I had children. Now the “studio” is just an immense desk with shelves above and drawers below. These are pictures taken of the table top on March 26. Click on any image to see enlargements.

When I am sitting at my work space, this is what I see on my left. On the far left, just out of view, are spools of wire and a postal scale, and several replicas of Shiloh’s necklace from “REPO! The Genetic Opera” which I hope to finish soon. In the picture itself are several pendants, magnets, clock parts, and other materials. In the top left corner you can see some of my little “shrine” of creativity, with crystal balls, a steampunk clock, gargoyle and other bits which are not used for jewelry but which make me feel happy.

After I took these pictures, I realized that my work space looks a lot like those I Spy kind of PC games such as the “Mystery Case Files” Ravenhurst or Madam Fate. This is not by design, it’s just the way I work. But it could explain why I enjoyed those games so much.

Below is a closeup of the “Resin Staging Area” shown at the bottom of the above pic. This is the area of my work space where I lay out all of the items which will require resin. You can also see several pendants and other things that are in progress.

And in the middle of the work space, we have my bottles of chain, tools, assorted bits, and a lovely picture from Bioshock 2…

Below you can see my trusty pliers, which were made in Germany and have been used to make jewelry for the past 10 years. I love the feel of them in my hand. And to the left is my little jeweler’s anvil. The ugly green pad muffles the sound and keeps everything from bouncing all around when I’m beating the dickens out of things like broken clocks or metal disks. You can also see the tape measure I have along the edge of the table. This is really handy.

Here’s a view of my bounty of gears, after taking apart some broken clocks from the flea market. The gears range in size up to about 1-1/2 inches across. Aren’t they gorgeous? I haven’t decided what I want to do with them. They would make wonderful pendants, just by themselves. I don’t want to get stupid and start gluing Swarovski crystals or octopi to them. I might just keep them to use if I ever get around to making a steampunk costume. I don’t know.

Here’s the right side of this space, not very exciting, but included for the sake of completion. Because I’m right-handed, I tend to keep things such as tools and cords on this side. There are trays of filigree and bezels stacked up there, some pictures from REPO!, and a can of bronze spray paint which I am going to use to steampunk mod a toy fortune-telling machine I bought at Target. I am taking pictures of that project as I go, and I will post that when it’s finished. Part of the problem with doing assemblage art, and not having a lot of free time, is that some of my projects drag on and on for months or even years, while I am trying to find, or design, all of the pieces. Right now, with the fortune-teller, I am trying to either find an old doll to replace the cheezy little plastic guy, or decide whether I want to make something out of Fimo. I’ll keep you posted.

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you enjoyed it. Cheers.

SOLD Bathysphere Necklace

jlh-recyclingsymbol-sm.jpg Item#SP031SPHERE $78.00 SOLD

Free first class shipping & handling to the U.S. and Canada! Click here for more information.

The original Bathysphere was a spherical deep-sea submersible lowered into the ocean on a cable and used to conduct a series of dives off the coast of Bermuda from 1930 to 1934. It was designed in the 1920s by American engineer Otis Barton, to be used by the naturalist William Beebe for studying undersea wildlife.

This “Bathysphere” necklace features pocket watch parts, brass charms, propeller, sea horse, a brass disc hammered with the imprint of several gears, a piece from a vintage clothing button, old clock parts, and a lovely drippy oceany bead by North Carolina ceramic artist Elaine Ray. New brass chain, vintage clasp. From start to finish, it took me several months to create, as I searched and assembled all of the components.

Centerpiece measures 2-inches across, entire necklace is 18.5 inches long. This is an original work of jewelry art, only one available, designed and created in my private studio. Please note that monitors vary, and the color may be slightly different in person. Gift boxed.

Please note that this piece will hang differently on different people, and is not adjustable. On someone with a smaller neck, it will hang something like the first picture. On a larger neck, it will look more like the second picture. If you would like it re-sized, or sized to fit a specific length, please put a note in the comment box of the order form when ordering.

My Neo-Victorian, steampunk and other costuming pieces are for fun and art, and may not be as durable as my other jewelry. Care should be taken when wearing, as gears and other parts may snag clothing and are easily broken. Jewelry should not be subjected to chemicals, perfumes, dyes, lotions, or rigorous treatment, such as wearing while exercising, swimming, working, cleaning, etc. Please note that I have no way to 100% guarantee the condition of any vintage, recycled or “rescued” parts, in regards to being hypoallergenic, or whether they contain lead, nickel, aluminum or any other materials. Purchase and wear at your discretion. More about steampunk jewelry.
