Steampunk rings tutorial

My step-by-step video shows you how to make, in under 10 minutes and for under $10, the same kind of steampunk rings that others are selling on Etsy for $28-$55. I’ve been making similar rings since 2008, but I do not sell these rings on Etsy, so please don’t make the mistake of thinking I am selling these for $55. My $55 pieces tend to be more elaborate and take more time and unusual parts to create.

Most steampunk jewelry requires a great degree of time, skill and money (especially when trying to find and purchase antique parts), and thus it is more expensive than jewelry purchased in stores. But these rings are fun and easy, and need not cost much. They look great and make a nice gift.

Steampunk Clockroach Earrings

Free first class shipping & handling to the U.S. and Canada! Click here for more information.

Real watch gears set in Ice Resin on brass bug charms. Filigree. Faceted Czech glass. Designed and handmade in my private studio. Earrings are 2 inches long, not including the brass leverback ear wires in that measurement. The bugs themselves are 1-1/4 inches long. I know they are probably scarabs, not cockroaches, but I couldn’t resist the pun.

This is an original work of jewelry art, only one pair available, the item in the picture is exactly the item you will receive. Please note that monitors vary, and the color may be slightly different in person. Gift boxed.

My neo-Victorian, steampunk and other costuming pieces are individual works of art. Care should be taken when wearing, as watch gears and other parts may snag on hair, skin and clothing. Jewelry should not be subjected to chemicals, perfumes, dyes, lotions, or rigorous treatment, such as wearing while exercising, swimming, working, cleaning house, etc. More about steampunk jewelry.

SOLD Celadon Bracelet

Item#B911ER $20.00 SOLD

Free first class shipping & handling to the U.S. and Canada! Click here for more information.

I love working with components by NC ceramic artist Elaine Ray. I made this bracelet with one of her beads & charms, complementing them with brass chain & strands of hand-dyed silk, and a hand-forged wire hook closure. Measures 7-1/2 inches long. Designed and handmade in my private studio. This is an original work of jewelry art, only one available, the item in the picture is exactly the item you will receive. Please note that monitors vary, and the color may be slightly different in person. Gift boxed.

BTW “celadon” is a sea-foam green color. As a pottery glaze, it was invented in China and dates back about a thousand years.

Medieval ::Peccatum:: Pendant

jlh-recyclingsymbol-sm.jpg Item#N911SIN $20.00

Free first class shipping & handling to the U.S. and Canada! Click here for more information.

A warning… or a suggestion? “Peccatum” is the Latin word for “sin.” * This miniature from a medieval painting depicts Adam, Eve, the apple and the serpent. I’ve been collecting images for years (I use only found ephemera, never printed off of the computer) and I don’t remember where I got this one, or who is the artist, but it probably came from an old National Geographic magazine or an old art history textbook.

The pendant was created with a brass bezel, and the image set under Ice Resin. Measures 1-1/8 inches across (picture above is enlarged to show details), hangs on a dark brown suede leather cord adjustable between 18-20 inches long by hooking the lobster claw clasp on any link of the extension chain. Czech glass embellishment. Designed and handmade in my private studio. This is an original work of jewelry art, only one available, the item in the picture is exactly the item you will receive. Please note that monitors vary, and the color may be slightly different in person. Gift boxed.

* “Peccatum” is also a Norwegian metal band, but that is just a coincidence.

SOLD Steampunk Portal Pendant

jlh-recyclingsymbol-sm.jpg Item#SP811PORTAL $30.00

A view to the past… This piece features a “portal” of red clay and metallic glaze, with real watch gears (acquired from broken watches), set in Ice Resin. The ring of the portal was made by my friend Elaine Ray who makes ceramic jewelry parts, but the pendant itself was designed and assembled by myself in my private studio. Pendant measures 1-1/8 inches across and comes on 20-inch brass ball chain. This is an original work of jewelry art, only one available, the item in the picture is exactly the item you will receive. Please note that monitors vary, and the color may be slightly different in person. Gift boxed.

My neo-Victorian, steampunk and other costuming pieces are individual works of art. Care should be taken when wearing. Jewelry should not be subjected to chemicals, perfumes, dyes, lotions, or rigorous treatment, such as wearing while exercising, swimming, working, cleaning house, etc. More about steampunk jewelry.

Clockwork Queen Victoria Pendant

Pendant measures 1-1/4 x 2 inches, and comes on 20-inch brass ball chain. This is an original work of jewelry art, only one available, the item in the picture is exactly the item you will receive. Neo-Victorian “Windrose” Necklace

jlh-recyclingsymbol-sm.jpg Item#SP711WINDROSE $60.00

Free first class shipping & handling to the U.S. and Canada! Click here for more information.

You don’t have to be an airship captain or steampunk adventurer to enjoy this piece, created in my private studio with brass filigree, compass rose (also known as a “windrose”), cartographer “wind” charms, Czech glass beads, stone-inlaid globe, turquoise, and a combination of new and vintage chain. Centerpiece measures 1.75 x 2.75 inches. Length is adjustable with lobster clasp (see below) between 15 and 17 inches long — please note that it is meant to be worn as a choker or close to choker style, and it won’t look right if it hangs too low on the chest. But if additional length is required, please put a note in the special instructions box when ordering and I will resize.

SOLD Hammered Metal “Serenity” in Nickel Silver

NICKEL SILVER $20.00 – Item#BC711NS SOLD

Free first class shipping & handling within the United States! Click here for details.

Features the Chinese symbols for “serenity.” Each individual necklace is made by hand and measures 1-inch across (image enlarged to show details). Hung on 18-inch black leather cord with clasp. Due to the creation process, pendants may vary slightly from the one shown here. Monitors vary, so color may appear slightly different in person, or under different light conditions. Gift boxed. Number available: 1.

HOW I MAKE THEM

I drew my own version of the Chinese symbols for “serenity” and had my drawing made into a small rubber stamp. I use the stamp to put the image on a metal disk, then I ink over the stamped image by hand with a fine-tipped permanent marker to make it darker.

The disks are submerged in a solution of ferric chloride, and this acid etches away anything not covered by ink. After an hour or two (depending on the strength of the acid and the type of metal) the disk is removed and the acid neutralized with baking soda.

The disks are rinsed, sanded, and then domed by hand using a ball-peen hammer and small anvil. I apply silver black, an oxidizing agent. This “ages” them, making them darker and enhancing the characters. Then I rinse, sand and polish the disks again. A hole is punched for the jump ring, and then the finished pendant is hung on a length of dark brown leather cord, to which a clasp is added.

From start to finish, a single pendant like this takes several hours to create.
