Earthy and mysterious… Spirals are some of the most ancient of human symbols, featured on the 5,000-year-old Newgrange monument in Ireland.

This necklace features a spiral pendant handmade by North Carolina ceramic artist Elaine Ray on a double strand of hand-dyed silk embellished with glass beads. Pendant measures 1-1/4 inches across, necklace is adjustable between 16-18 inches long with copper extension chain and lobster claw clasp. One-of-a-kind handmade jewelry, only one available. In honor of Saint Patrick’s Day, I created this bracelet with a Celtic knot button, glass, stone, and handmade ceramic beads in various shades of green. Adjustable around 7-1/2 inches (the “standard” women’s bracelet size is 7 inches, but your mileage may vary). Women with very slim wrists will require resizing by removing at least one of the beads or some of the links in the design. Additional length may also be achieved by add a few more links. This hammered metal pendant was made by hand, and is unique and one-of-a-kind. Brass disk riveted to copper. A detailed explanation of how I make these disks is given below. HOW I CREATE MY HAMMERED METAL PENDANTS

I begin by hand-drawing the desired image on a disk with a permanent marker. Then the disk is submerged in a solution of ferric chloride, and this acid etches away anything not covered by ink. After an hour or two (depending on the strength of the acid) the disk is removed and the acid neutralized with baking soda. The disk is rinsed, sanded, and then domed by hand using a ball-peen hammer and small anvil.

To bring out the design, I apply silver black, an oxidizing agent. Then I rinse, sand and polish the disk again. The larger metal disk, used for the base, is also domed by hand, and then the smaller and larger disks are riveted together — again, by hand, using the ball-peen hammer and anvil. The resulting pendant has a more primitive, handmade look than items which are machine or laser engraved.

A hole is punched for the jump ring, and then the finished pendant is hung on a length of leather cord, to which a clasp is added.

From start to finish, a pendant like this takes several hours to create.

It is possible for me to make custom pendants, but I have limited freehand drawing skills, and simple drawings with bold lines etch better than small, complex ones. If you are interested in a custom piece, contact me.

Gnome Terrariums are wonderful, self-contained, magical environments. Each tiny Gnome Terrarium has just the right balance of fairy dust, moss, and stone to maintain a single North American Diminutive Wildwood Gnome. No watering nor feeding is required, just an occasional cotton swabbing if the fairy dust gets out of control. Simply remove the cork during each full moon, and your Gnome will conduct its necessary business and return by morning.

NAMING: Each Gnome has a secret name known only to itself, but feel free to name it anyway. Your Gnome will have given you a name, too (probably something like Big Eye or Bad Breath).

IMPORTANT: Without magic, they will not thrive. You must whisper a wish to your Gnome at least once a week. Keeping your Gnome Terrarium near stones, plants, ceramic unicorns, pewter wizards, and any other magical items or creatures also helps to maintain the health of your Gnome. ALL GNOMES ARE WILLING PARTICIPANTS IN THE GNOME TERRARIUM, AND NO GNOMES ARE HARMED WHILE MAKING THIS PRODUCT. Join the Gnome Terrarium project and help preserve the Gnome population as its imaginary habitat dwindles.

Each Gnome Terrarium is handmade and unique. Stones, moss, fairy dust and gnomes will vary from the one shown here. Each Gnome Terrarium measures just two inches high (not including cork, image enlarged to show details) and comes in a dark green drawstring pouch, along with an instruction sheet. Sterling silver necklace features Victorian Art Nouveau-style dancing fairy accented with real faceted iolite semi-precious stone drop and faceted Czech glass. The unique properties of iolite (changing colors depending on the angle of the sun) made it useful to the Vikings in navigating their ships. In stone lore, iolite is said to aid intuition.

This is my own original Celtic Crescent Moon Knot design. I was selling it on shirts, mousepads, mugs, etc., through Cafe Press for several years. I’ve also had some people ask if they could use it as a tattoo design. Nate sent me a pic of his finished tattoo (below). It looks awesome! I love it. (Redheads with freckles are nice, too! Cheers, Nate!)
