HOW I MAKE THEM

I drew my own version of the Chinese symbols for “serenity” and had the drawing made into a small rubber stamp. I used the stamp to put the image on a metal disk, then I inked over the stamped image by hand with a fine-tipped permanent marker to make it darker.

The disk was submerged in a solution of ferric chloride, which etched away anything not covered by ink. After an hour or two (depends on the strength of the acid) the disk was removed and the acid neutralized with baking soda.

The disk was rinsed, sanded, and then domed by hand using a ball-peen hammer and small anvil. I applied silver black, an oxidizing agent. This made it darker and enhanced the etched image. Then I rinsed, sanded and polished the disks again, and a hole was punched for the jump ring.

From start to finish, a single pendant like this takes several hours to create.

This bracelet is for the Browncoats, a tribute to Joss Whedon’s cult TV show FIREFLY and movie SERENITY. Features the Chinese characters for “Serenity” which I acid etched on nickel silver, hand-hammered, antiqued, and embellished with beads representing each of the Big Damn Heroes (from left end): Simon (bone); Kaylee (pink flower); Inara (carved carnelian stone); Mal (faceted brown glass); Zoe (tigereye); Wash (glass leaf); Book (cathedral cut glass); Jayne (ceramic… y’know, like made out of mud lol); and River (color-changing mood bead).
