FIREFLY Planetary Postmark Stamps

May 27th, 2009 by Jen

ff-londinium.jpg     ff-beaumonde.jpg

I’ve had several Browncoats ask me where I get my planetary postmarks, which are stamped on the gift boxes I send out with FIREFLY-SERENITY items. I have to give credit to Heather at Wear With Style for giving me the idea — she ships her hand-knitted Jayne hats in boxes covered with planetary postmarks. I designed my own set of postmarks using GIMP, and then I had the stamps made at RubberStamps.net. If you’d like to make rubber stamps of your own, feel free to use my images. I only ask that you not use them for commercial purposes or sell them, and that you give me credit for the artwork. Thanks!

Also, I have an “Alliance Inspector” stamp that was made by using a template at RubberStamps.net for a small, round, self-inking stamp. And I chose the purple ink option… since they’re “purplebellies.” The Chinese characters on the Sihnon postmark supposedly say “Beautiful World” — but for all I know, they actually say “Monkey Underwear” or something.

Inara Cosplay Jewelry

May 26th, 2009 by Jen

For Browncoat costuming reference, I’ve put together some images of Inara jewelry as seen in these FIREFLY episodes (from top left corner, going clockwise): 1) “Serenity” (pilot), “Shindig” (last scene) and “The Message”; 2) “Our Mrs. Reynolds”; 3) “Trash”; 4) “Heart of Gold” and “War Stories”; 5) “Shindig” (duel scene) and “War Stories”; and 6) (bottom left corner) “Jaynestown.”

Jewelry replicas for cosplay are some of the few items on my website which I do make again and again, because they are for costuming and not one of my original designs. I have spent a lot of time pausing, zooming and examining the episodes; sketching pictures; and searching for just the right materials in order to make them. But I never know when I’ll be able to make more — finding parts to match, and enough spare time, is not easy.

Below are pictures of some of the cosplay jewelry items I’ve made in the past. All of these items are SOLD. They are shown here as samples of my work.

Steampunk Jewelry Book

May 21st, 2009 by Jen

jlh-steambook.jpg

I’m in a book! Steampunk-Style Jewelry: A Maker’s Collection of Victorian, Fantasy, and Mechanical Designs by Jean Campbell will feature some of my own original jewelry, including step-by-step how-to instructions explaining how they were made. Other artists who contributed to the book: Melanie Brooks, Andrew Thornton, Cynthia Deis, Jamie Hogsett, Jane Mormino, Margot Potter, Barbe Saint John, Annie Singer, Madelyn Smoak, Tracy Thomasson, and Jean Yates. It is available for pre-order from Amazon now, but I’m told that it won’t actually come out until January 2010. I can’t wait to see it!

SOLD Steampunk Clockwork Necklace

May 20th, 2009 by Jen

jlh-059-clockwork.jpg

jlh-recyclingsymbol-sm.jpg  The centerpiece of this necklace is a clockwork mechanism from a non-working Monarch 17 jewel pocketwatch. This treasure was found in a very clean and shiny state, I did not have to clean or polish it myself. I just love how the red jewels and brass gears contrast with the silver (steel?) parts, and have embellished it with brass beads and silvertone chain. The centerpiece itself measures 1-5/8 inches across (image enlarged to show details). One-of-a-kind (OOAK) item, created in my private studio, only one available.

SOLD ~*Lady of the Lake*~ Earrings

May 19th, 2009 by Jen

jlh-059-ladylake.jpg

$25.00 - Item#E059LLAKE

These beads captivated me the moment I saw them! Such an unusual shade of deep, sparkling blue-gray-green, like the waters of a magical lake. The earrings include eight Swarovski crystals, six faceted Czech glass drops, and two brass filigree. Measure 2 inches long, not including the nickel-free brass leverback ear wires in that measurement. One of a kind item, only one pair available, designed and handmade in my private studio. The picture (which is enlarged to show details) is exactly the item you will receive. Gift boxed.

The Lady of the Lake gave King Arthur the sword Excalibur. Different versions of the story give her name as Nimue, Vivian, Elaine or Niniane. In many European myths, magical women are associated with bodies of water.

Inara Serra Necklace

May 19th, 2009 by Jen

jlh-059-inaratile.jpg

jlh-recyclingsymbol-sm.jpg  $20.00 - Item#BC059-I

This is a real letter “I” Scrabble tile, made into an altered art charm. On one side, I added a magazine cutout image of Morena Baccarin as Inara Serra from Joss Whedon’s cult TV show FIREFLY, (NOT a computer printout, I only use found/recycled images) and coated it with Ice Resin (that’s what’s causing the glossy glint on the photo). You can see the reverse side, with the letter “I” below. It’s hung on a strand of kimono fabric from Japan. Necklace is adjustable between 17 and 18 inches long with a clasp and extension chain. Charm is 5/8 inch across. Gift boxed.

With this item, I don’t know when I will ever find another recycled image or “I” tile, so it is truly a one-of-a-kind (OOAK) item, only one available.

Sterling Silver Labradorite Earrings

May 14th, 2009 by Jen

jlh-059-earrings.jpg

$18.00 - Item#E059SS

Sterling silver earrings feature freshwater pearls and faceted stones. I was told that the stones were labradorite, but I think they look more like andalusite to me (both can look a little iridescent, but the labradorite tends to be more gray/blue, and andalusite green/brown, from what I’ve seen). Measure 3/4-inch long (not including the earwires). Designed and handmade in my studio. Original, handmade, one-of-a-kind jewelry; only one pair available. Gift boxed.

For some reason, the photograph makes the stones look very brown. They are actually almost green, and more translucent, when the light hits them. According to stone lore, labradorite reveals our spiritual destiny, psychic abilities, and wisdom of the universe.
