SOLD Steampunk ~ REFLECTIONARY OCCULATOR ~ Bracelet

March 17th, 2009 by Jen

I spent several months creating this piece. Not that I spent every waking moment working on it, just that it’s creation was spread out over a length of time. It took me awhile to find and assemble the perfect parts, which would be both fairly durable (people tend to be harder on bracelets than on other jewelry items), and also evocative of the steampunk aesthetic.

This bracelet contains both new and vintage materials, including some old pocket watch parts, a piece from an old belt, a new faceted Czech glass bead (inside the wire coil), glass cabochon, brass chain and clasp (the closure assembly is shown up close, below).

Steampunk pieces are costume pieces and works of art, and care should be taken when wearing. There may be sharp or pointy parts which could snag on clothing and/or break off, and these creations should not be subjected to chemicals, perfumes, dyes, lotions, or rigorous treatment, such as wearing while exercising, swimming, working, cleaning the house, etc. Please note that I have no way to 100% guarantee the condition of any vintage, recycled or “rescued” parts, in regards to being hypoallergenic, or whether they contain lead, nickel, aluminum or any other materials. Purchase and wear at your discretion.

You can follow me on Twitter

March 11th, 2009 by Jen

twitter.jpg

I’ve now joined all the twits tweeting on Twitter, so if you’re into that sort of thing, you can follow me by clicking on the icon above. Updates will be about my jewelry, my jewelry-making schedule, and my jewelry-related endeavors (such as the book coming out this Spring which will feature some of my work). Or, occasionally, I will mention other interesting things that are either inspiring — or interrupting — my creativity. And I will talk about new items while they are still in the process of creation, so that you’ll know what’s coming even before it’s posted on my blog.

Celtic Crescent Moon Knot original design by Jen

This is my own original Celtic Crescent Moon Knot design. I’ve been selling it on shirts, mousepads, mugs and more through Cafe Press for the past few years (click on the image above to go directly to Cafe Press).

In that time, I’ve also had a few people ask if they could use it as a tattoo design. Nate recently sent me a pic of his finished tattoo. It looks awesome! I love it. (Redheads with freckles are nice, too! Cheers, Nate!)

SOLD Steampunk AIRSHIP CAPTAIN’S MEDAL necklace

March 4th, 2009 by Jen

jlh-039-steamedal.jpg

This piece contains both new and vintage materials. The cross was rescued from a vintage necklace of unknown period, purchased at a church rummage sale. The gears are from old, broken timepieces, and are wired into place, not glued — they will turn if manually manipulated. The chain, clasp, and charms are all new. The necklace is 18 inches long, but the clasp may be hooked on any link to adjust the length. The centerpiece itself measures 2-inches long. One-of-a-kind (OOAK) item, created in my private studio, only one available.

SOLD Neo-Victorian “Eternal Flight” Necklace

March 4th, 2009 by Jen

jlh-039-wings.jpg

This is a retro-vintage piece — the parts are new, but it has the erstwhile style of a bygone time. Copper and brass filigree is combined with brass military-style wings, brass chain and copper connectors. Though the materials are new, some do have spots of patina, particularly on the copper bits, though it doesn’t show up in the pictures due to the reflection of the light. The entire necklace is slightly adjustable between 16-17 inches long. The centerpiece itself measures 2-inches across, from wingtip to wingtip. One-of-a-kind (OOAK) item, created in my private studio, this item is SOLD.

If you look carefully, you will see that there are little snakes on either side of the copper button, in the middle of the centerpiece. Recently, when preparing a presentation about jewelry history and steampunk style, I read that snakes were a popular motif in Victorian times. This was for two reasons — first, because the Victorian era was a very sentimental period, and the snake was associated with eternal love (Victorians loved symbolism); second, because it was also an era in which the British were fascinated by all things Eqyptian and Asian, and (not unlike today) many style elements were borrowed from other cultures.
